Dry Stone Wall Update

The dry stone walls of the Mournes are a treasured part of our national heritage.

Built with Mourne granite they not only reflect the traditional skills of the local stone men but the distinctive geology, wildlife, culture and agricultural traditions of the area too.  This traditional skill lives on within Mourne, but with the pressures of today’s lifestyle the busy farmer can scarce afford the time demands required to upkeep the miles of wall typically criss-crossing a farm.

Through the Mourne Mountains Landscape Partnership we funded a series of dry stone wall workshops throughout the Mourne area, where participants from all walks of life learnt the essential skills needed to build, maintain and repair single, double skinned and cut stone walls which may be found throughout Mourne.
