MOURNE YOUTH RANGERS 2017

Mourne Heritage Trust announces the launch of the 2017 Youth Ranger Scheme, a great opportunity for young people in Mourne to learn about their local natural heritage and get involved in practical tasks to protect it.

Now in its 12th year, the Mourne Youth Ranger Scheme offers 14-16 year olds the opportunity to learn about what it means to be a Ranger in the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as picking up some valuable skills and experience. Dave Farnan, Area Ranger for the Mourne Heritage Trust, said about the scheme ‘This is a great opportunity for young people in Mourne to get involved with the practical work MHT undertakes to help maintain and protect the area and gain an understanding and appreciation of this special landscape’.

The programme will offer the ‘Mourne Youth Rangers’ an intensive one week course of practical environmental work and will get participants actively engaged in activities which help to restore natural habitats while learning about the unique Mourne environment. The scheme is offered free of charge to the participants. The course will run from the 24th of July to the 28th of July 2017.

Last year’s Youth Ranger Team received the 2016 Coca Cola Coast Care Award in the youth category for their involvement in doing litter lifts on beaches at Kilkeel.

This year’s team will be engaging in a similar programme of activities mostly taking place in the mountains near Slieve Binnian, learning to navigate, using GPS to help with surveying of the mountain vegetation and monitoring areas damaged by wildfire. They will also take part in the restoration of areas of heathland damaged by erosion and the repair of upland walking trails.

Alan Whitcroft, Co-ordinator for the Mourne Heritage Trust’s Volunteer Programme, said ‘we are very pleased that the John Muir Trust enable us to offer our Youth Rangers the John Muir Discovery Award for participation in this environmental activity’.

Please note that the numbers that we can take on the Youth Ranger Scheme are limited so we would urge those interested to download the application pack (Click Here) or request one by e-mail from ActiveLifestyles@mourne.co.uk or collect an application pack from our office at 19 Causeway Road, Newcastle and return the completed application as soon as possible, no later than the closing date of 7th July 2017.
