New Board for Leave No Trace Ireland

Leave No Trace Ireland inspires responsible use of the outdoors through partnerships, research and education. Dr. Richard Thorn, Chairperson, of Leave No Trace Ireland, today, (19th February, 2015), announced the establishment of a new Board at Leave No Trace Ireland. The new Board members include key representatives from state agencies in Tourism, Education, Sport, Health and Environment. Other expertise includes membership from Training Experts from the private sector, public sector and Global Certification standards. The Board members will be responsible for devising and implementing strategies for the development and promotion of Leave No Trace across the island of Ireland.

As increasing numbers of people seek the beauty and exhilaration of outdoor travel and recreation in Ireland, our collective mark on the environment and its natural process increases. Litter, water pollution, disturbance of vegetation, wildlife and livestock and other people are all indicators of the need to develop a national ethic that protects both natural and cultural heritage. In recent years, adventure sports such as walking, cycling, angling, surfing, kayaking and sailing have increased in popularity attracting both local and international enthusiasts to Ireland.

Richard Thorn expressed the necessity of Leave No Trace Ireland in delivering education and training to ensure we protect this sector. “I believe the Board members have the proven skills, expertise and commitment necessary to ensure that Leave No Trace Ireland will bring about greater education and awareness for the benefit all users of Ireland’s countryside”.

Leave No Trace Ireland is endorsed by Comhairle na Tuaithe, The National Countryside and Recreation strategy and The Northern Ireland Outdoor Recreation Plan. The partner driven organisation teaches people of all ages how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, and is the most widely accepted outdoor ethics programme in Ireland. Through relevant and targeted education, research and outreach, Leave No Trace ensures the long-term health of our natural world.
