View of Mournes is simply the best!

Mourne Heritage Trust has expressed its delight at the selection of the Mourne Mountains as the best view in the UK. Around one third of people surveyed by The Countryman magazine voted for the Mournes as seen from Tyrella, beating off competition from iconic views of Snowdonia, the Isle of Skye, the Lake District and Pembrokeshire.

Desmond Patterson, Chairman of the Trust said, ‘This very good news further proves what we in the Mournes all know already - that our countryside and coast form a very, very special place. Years after it inspired Percy French it seems that the unique combination of mountain and sea still provokes wonder. This is credit to the public and private landowners who have shaped and looked after the landscape and all those who support them.’

The Trust’s Chief Executive, Martin Carey, said ‘As we await the outcome of our latest funding application to Northern Ireland Environment Agency for resources to continue to provide services to the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) designation, this news is a boost to us and to all those who supported the #LoveMourne campaign in 2015.  It is less than a year since central government funding for the care of the Mourne AONB was abruptly terminated, before being partially reinstated for the remainder of this financial year and then further boosted by the Minister for the Environment just this month.’

Reflecting on the other areas that were in the running for the award Mr Carey said, ‘One thing in common to the beautiful landscapes that fell beneath the Mournes in the poll is the presence of secure long term resources for the care of the landscapes that make the view. As the media coverage of the award also alludes to the wealth of stories behind the landscape and the living working character of the Mournes also deserve attention. We hope our funding bid for caring for Mourne next year and beyond delivers at least short to medium term security and that, with partners, we can build towards arrangements longer term commensurate with the quality of the landscape we all love. Not that we needed reminding, but since we have officially the best view to be found in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we ought to keep on looking after it’.
