Project Description

The MMLP and Mourne Heritage Trust are working alongside local landowners, farmers and partner organisations to restore areas of the Eastern Mourne SAC to favourable condition through the delivery of practical projects on the ground. The partnership seeks to encourage best practice in conserving and enhancing heathland within the Mourne Area.

The Eastern Mournes is one of the largest and most natural areas of heathland in Northern Ireland and we hope to help wildlife by working together to create a wildlife rich landscape by:

• raising awareness of the importance of the habitats found in the Mournes through practical and cultural engagement
• working alongside Landowners and Local Farmers to manage and restore heathland and connected habitats, in a sympathetic manner
• using local knowledge to create wildlife corridors, connecting the landscape of the Mournes and increasing biodiversity in the area

There are opportunities for:
• local people to work/volunteer alongside us, sharing knowledge and equipment, gaining expertise, and receiving valuable advice
• local landowners and farmers to work with us, restoring or enhancing heathland habitat areas on their land
• researching new techniques and methods to protect this valuable network of habitats from threats such as Wild Fires, Climate Change etc
• surveying and monitoring heathland and related habitats and the wildlife found living there

If you are interested in volunteering or working on this important project, please contact the MMLP office to register your interest.
