Project Description

This project involved the repair of some of the main walking routes in the Mournes that have suffered severe erosion in recent years. Innovative path design techniques were deployed to minimise visual impact, yet ensure long term sustainability of the trails. This involved the use of sheep’s fleeces, which assist with drainage and is a technique that was used many years ago.

Trails repaired under this project included:

• Slieve Binnian North Tor to the Back Castles and South Tor (1547m)
• Brandy Pad to the saddle of Slieve Donard/Commedagh (1212m)
• Slieve Binnian South Tor towards Carricklittle Track along the Mourne Wall (947m)
• Bouldering access at Bloody Bridge, 150m of path works and landscaping of collection areas
